About the Project
The Pedestrian, Bicycle, and Equestrian Master Plan project is in progress and is anticipated to be adopted and ready for implementation in Spring 2013. The Master Plan will be a blueprint for physical improvements and a guidebook for economic development with the vision of becoming a foot-, bike-, and horse-friendly community with new and improved businesses in the outdoor industry.
This project is about evolution. Historically, residents and visitors were drawn to the valley in pursuit of natural beauty, small town charm, and outdoorsy activities including hunting, fishing, and skiing. In the 1990s, Big Bear became a major stop on the professional mountain biking circuit. More recently, the number of road cyclists, marathon runners, and adventure athletes has steadily increased. In response, we have made a conscious decision to foster this natural evolution by developing a comprehensive vision for dirt trails, paved pathways, and reaching higher economic potential.
Beginning in the fall of 2012, the City of Big Bear Lake and the MIG consultant team, together with project partners Caltrans and San Bernardino County, initiated the Big Bear Valley Pedestrian, Bicycle and Equestrian Master Plan process. Through input from the community and recreational users, and a thorough analysis of existing conditions and future needs, the Master Plan will set the course to:
- Improve connectivity and safety for all modes and users;
- Integrate land use and transportation decisions;
- Strengthen commerce, identity and community;
- PositionBigBearValley for active living and an outdoor recreation economy; and
- Forward existing plans, goals and policies.
